CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS
#1: All living things are made of cells...
- Cells are the basic components of all living things.
- Some organisms are unicellular (single- celled), like bacteria, or multicellular, like humans.
- Remember, the prefix “uni” = “one” and the prefix “multi” = “many."
#2: All living things move...
- Some things may move so slowly that you need a microscope over a long period of time to see it!

#3: All living things use energy...
|
Observe the Venus Flytrap as it uses energy to trap and digest its prey! The Venus Flytrap is made up of cells that help break down and metabolize the nutrients from the fly. It is also important to recognize that even plants "move" in some way. But remember, they need ENERGY
to be able to do any of this! |
#4: All living things grow and develop...
- Part of growing involves developing new cells! In muticellular organisms, these new cells are made during processes called mitosis and meiosis.
#5: All living things reproduce...
•Either by sexual or asexual means.
•Remember, the prefix "a" = "not."
•Remember, the prefix "a" = "not."
#6: All living things respond and adapt to their environment...
- Stimulus= something you respond to.
- Example: When you pull your hand off of a hot stove the hot stove is the stimulus, and pulling your hand away is the response.
